Trier

Got a truth check on the coat of arms of Trier

Trier may be the oldest city in Germany, established by the Romans in or before 30 BC, as the capital of the Roman province in central Germany. However, there is a much older history for this place that predates Rome by over 1000 years, that tells of a legendary wandering Assyrian Prince who made his way to that part of the world and actually founded the city.

The Trier Steipe (the word means 'acrcade'), was built in 1483, but destoyed in WW2 and rebuilt in 1970
The main market square, and St. Gangolf in the background

The market square and the central and very colorful fountain

Lovely old and ornate facades beautifully maintained. As you can see, some of these historic buildings are now hotels

The Trier Cathedral, not in Gothic but Romanic style

A fabulously crafted church organ

While not a friend of rococco or baroque art, this work leaves me speechless, a ceiling in one of the rooms of the Cathedral
Saint Andrew's Portable Altar contains the sole of one of the Apostle's sandals. The beautiful case was crafted in the 10th Century and had been comissioned by Archbishop Egbert ( AD 977 to 993) who held this saint in especially high esteem.

I see a lot of empty setting for stones, however, the gold remains - insteresting
The wood verneer work is beyond belief here
